Undersea Cable to Speed Up Broadband

A NEW 6900 kilometre, $200 million undersea data cable from Sydney to Guam announced yesterday will mean cheaper and faster broadband for all Australians, its makers say.

Guam is one of the Pacific's two major exchanges that transfer data between Asia and the US. The optical cable of PIPE Network will be the fourth such link from Australia to the US - and the first not owned by Telstra or Optus parent SingTel.

It will halve the cost of a data connection to the US - meaning better internet access deals for Australians, said PIPE Networks' Lloyd Ernst.

It also removes a speed bottleneck, allowing faster downloads from the US and making the Federal Government's planned national fibre-to-the-home optical network more worthwhile.

"It's no use buying a Ferrari and finding the speed limit is 15km/h," Mr Ernst said. "International connectivity is an important part of the equation."

He said there would be "quite a difference" in real download speeds, as congestion cleared on the international pipes.

Communications Minister Senator Stephen Conroy, who attended the announcement of the project in Melbourne, said the new cable would benefit consumers, businesses, and researchers.

"This is great news for Australian internet users because the result will be faster and cheaper broadband," he said.

More diversity on the international data market would drive broadband prices down, he said - though he declined to directly accuse Optus and Telstra of artificially keeping prices high by restricting the capacity of their international links.

Though the cable will not go online until June 2009, it should affect the prices Australian pay for the internet much sooner.

Australia's increasing internet use has driven total data downloads up by 50 per cent every year, putting upward pressure on internet access prices. But this announcement has reversed that pressure, said Simon Hackett, managing director of internet service provider Internode.

Mr Hackett said the cable's existing competitors were already "sharpening their pencils" to discount the price of international data, to ensure they did not lose customers to the new venture.

ISPs including Internode, iiNet and Primus meet with providers in Hawaii this week to negotiate new contracts for international data access - and would expect prices "a quarter better" than before, Mr Hackett said.

All three ISPs have contracted to buy capacity on the new cable.

Senator Conroy said the new cable was a "very neat fit" with the Labor Government's plans for a national optical fibre network, which will speed up domestic internet access.

The Government will announce a competitive bid process to build the $8 billion network in the next few weeks, Senator Conroy said.

Soldering a SATA-Data cable to a HDDActually, there's only 4 pins that matter You have 4 wires for signal, 2 per 'channel' and 3 grounds (which should be tied together anyway). The 4 bare wires on the outside of each pair/channel are ground, and any three should work.You absolutely do not want to do this without a multimeter. Keep abreast of the latest issues in computer technology with Rick MayburyIf you have decided against, selling, giving away or otherwise disposing of your old computer - see part 1 -- then here are a few more ideas for putting it to good use.Salvaging the more valuable or useful parts is one possibility, especially if it is past its prime, faulty or unreliable, and what's left, can be taken to your local recycling centre. Most of the components in a 4 or 5 year-old PC will be virtually obsolete but you might get a few pounds for the motherboard, CPU and cooling fan assembly if you put it on ebay, particularly if it was once a top-of the line combination. There is always a steady demand from people repairing faulty machines, though be honest about the condition, particularly if you cannot guarantee the parts are in full working order. There's not much you can do with old memory modules if they won't fit your current machine, which is highly unlikely since the technology changes so frequently, but once again they should have some second hand value, just don't expect to get anything like their original cost. If you have a lot of data on floppy discs then it's worth hanging on the floppy drive if your current PC isn't fitted with one. Most computers will have space for one inside the case and if the cables are not already fitted they are readily available from PC parts suppliers for a few pounds. Bootcamp Archive One component you definitely should remove and keep is the hard drive. If it is a standard ATA/IDE type - and most are -- with a capacity 20Gb or more then it can be easily put back into service as a second 'slave' drive in your present PC. I think you're over-engineering it. Nobody really bothers specifying cable locations that precisely for electrical wiring. There are rules to protect electrical wires from damage, but they don't involve precise mechanical drawings of the build. Further, you aren't going to be able to find anyone to install it to your diagram. Electrical engineers don't do house wiring, and electricians who do house wiring don't follow diagrams precisely like that, they just throw it in quick-and-dirty. Wiring is protected from damage, but using different techniques - for instance in North America there's a rule that you can go in 1-5/8" (40mm) without concern because wires and pipes are either guaranteed to be deeper than that, or will be guarded by a metal warning plate. However, since you are aiming for top quality and easy maintainability, there is definitely something you should think about: Metal conduit. This is where you lay a type of pipe designed for electrical service (and some of it pipe-fits quite easily) and then you run the circuits in the pipe using individual wires (i.e. Not with multi-conductor cables). The piping does several things for you. Generally, data cables are not allowed in mains electrical conduit or junction boxes, due to the risk of a wire melt putting mains voltage on equipment not rated for it. (Fiber-optic is OK). However you can lay parallel conduit for telecomm, and that conduit can be plastic. Depending on your level of expertise it should only take around fifteen to twenty minutes and when you next boot up your new PC all of your old files will be accessible, ready to be used or copied to your new hard drive. It really is that easy, however, I wouldn't recommend trying it if you are uncomfortable about poking around inside your PCs or you have any doubts about your DIY skills. If so you should wait for the next two episodes of Boot Camp, which will be looking at totally non-invasive data transfer methods using removable media and cables. It's virtually impossible to get an electric shock from a desktop PC; mains voltages are safely contained inside an earthed metal box and none of the cables emerging from the box carry more than 12 volts. Nevertheless you should unplug both PCs from the mains before you open the lids, we don't want any accidents, do we? Electronic components are remarkably robust but there is a very small chance you could damage something through a static discharge from your body or clothing. Although the risk is very low it doesn't hurt to briefly touch a nearby radiator, metal water pipe or earthed metal appliance, before you open up your PC. If you are really worried you can buy anti-static wrist straps from PC Suppliers and Maplin Electronics for a few poundsStart by opening up your old PC, on most models there will be only one hard drive and it will normally have two cables plugged into the back of it, one for the power supply with four coloured wires (red, two black and yellow). The other one will be a flat 'ribbon' connector that carries the data. Gently remove both plugs, they may be a little stiff, so don't tug on the cables or you may damage them. Tuck the cables out of the way and remove the four mounting screws - two each side. Avoid touching the connectors or the circuit boards on the underside; hold it by the sides and once the screws are out slide the drive out from its 'bay'.Bootcamp ArchiveNext set the drive to 'slave' mode. On most hard drives there will be a printed label showing the positions of the 'jumpers' for Master, Slave and Cable Select (CS). The jumpers are small connectors that bridge sets of pins and they're normally located on the rear of the drive. Your old drive should be in Master mode, so you can use the current positions for orientation and reference. Use a small pair of tweezers or thin long-nosed pliers to change the jumper(s) to the Slave setting. Now you can remove the cover from your new PC and locate a spare hard drive bay. If you are very lucky you will see a spare set of data and power cables nearby, though nowadays most new PCs now use SATA type drives, which use much smaller data cables. It's not a problem, though, and most motherboards have at least one 'legacy' ATA/IDE socket that you can use. If you don't have a spare ribbon cable you can borrow the one from your old PC (see also this week's Top Tip). It's a good idea to do a dry run first and fit the old drive into it's new home. If you have to move cables out of the way do it carefully so as not to loosen any connections. One you are happy with the fitting plug in the data and power cables. Note that both plugs are 'keyed', so they only fit one way around. The plugs should seat fairly easily so do not press too hard and be especially careful not to bend the pins on the data cable socket. If you are using the data cable from your old PC don't forget to connect the other end to the IDE socket on the motherboard..Fit the drive mounting screws and give all of the nearby cables and connectors a final check to make sure you haven't dislodged anything. Refit the case lid and switch on. Windows will boot up as normal and your old drive will be recognised and automatically assigned the next available drive letter. If so you can get on with the job of transferring your data using My Computer or Windows Explorer. If the drive doesn't show up in Explorer then here's a few troubleshooting tips.Switch off, disconnect form the mains, open the lid and double-check the power and data cables. If everything looks okay put the lid back on and boot into the PC's BIOS program. (Refer to the user or motherboard manual for the correct combination of keys to press at start-up). Run the drive setup/configuration utility and check that it has been recognised. On some BIOS there may be a 'switch' to enable the IDE connector. If the drive still isn't found then there is a problem with the data or power connections or the drive is faulty.ANTI STATIC WRIST STRAP Conductive pad, attached to a strap that fits around the user's wrist, attached to a resistor and a wire that clips onto a metal radiator or water pipe, designed to safely dissipate static chargesBIOSBasic Input Output System: diagnostic and configuration program stored in a microchip memory on the PC motherboard that checks the PC hardware before the operating system is loadedCABLE SELECT Special type of data cable used by some PC manufacturers that automatically selects Master or Slave mode SATA drives use a different type of power connector that will not fit ATA/IDE drives, however, most PC power supplies have at least one spare older-style 4-pin power connector as these are still widely used by CD and DVD drives. In the unlikely event a spare connector isn't available you can use a SATA to IDE power adaptor lead. These chips are used as part of Apple's MFI Certification program. Basically, you have to be a certified developer to sell lightning cables. If you buy a lightning cable from a reseller, you may receive a notification on your iPhone like This accessory is not supported every time you plug in the lightning cable. The pop-up is quite annoying. Your iPhone may then not charge, or charge very briefly, before mysteriously stopping to charge. It is not a hardware issue -- 5 Volts are still being passed through the cable -- it is Apple saying "you need a new cable!"IMO, Apple also uses this as a kind of planned obsolescence. It is my personal theory that the date of manufacture is also logged alongside the ID stored within the chip. This means that your phone's operating system knows how old the cable you're using to charge it is. So even if the cable is passing 5 volts to the phone, in theory, this would allow the Apple software to deny the voltage, preventing your phone from being charged. In theory, this would require you to spend more money to buy new cables. Which, IMO, is the entire point of the MFI certification system - to make people overpay for "certified" cables, and choose when the cables break themselves so people have to buy new cables.
