Another thing I noticed was that there was a big difference in readability between putting numbers side-by-side and one top of the other.PrototypeTo build my prototype I used cardboard and tape. I made the prototype larger than the actual size it would be so that I could clearly display the features and test the interface functionality with a user. Here is what the prototype looks like:AnalysisTo test this prototype, I sat down with a participant and asked them to screw in and unscrew a screw at a specified setting while vocalizing their thought process. To practice designing 3D low-fidelity prototypes, I was tasked to prototype an OXO handheld electric screwdriver as a new opportunity to expand their business into new product lines.Designing for OXOs Brand IdentityBefore sketching out design ideas, I wanted to familiarize myself with the OXO brand, hoping that the form of my design will match with OXOs brand identity. OXO incorporates comfortable and easy to use tools, while also applying simple,universal design. When I was sketching, I wanted to prioritize comfort, which is why the designs for the screwdriver include a hand grip area for the user to comfortably hold the screwdriver. I also attempted to emulate the simple designs of OXO, because the interfaces to be as minimalist as possible.Additionally, the sketches addressed the product requirements of a fluid speed control, a automatic screw driver selection (shape and size), direction mechanism (screwing in vs. screwing out), and a progress digital readout (number of screws in and out).PrototypeI created a handheld electric screwdriver prototype that is 6 inches long. With rocks and Easter eggs filled with rice inside, the prototype weighs one pound, emulating the actual weight of the product. Shape & FormI wanted the shape and form of the screwdriver to be comfortable and intuitive for the user. The handle on the screwdriver is slightly curved to emulate the natural grip when holding an object around your hand. If the set button should be pressed before or after selecting the shape and size.The placement of the reset button may get in the way when gripping the screwdriver, possibly causing unintentionally reset of the digital readout. Additionally there was no way to reset only one of the digital readout numbers. So if a user wanted to reset only the number of screws in, this would not be possible.Takeaways & Next StepsOverall based on this analysis, the most effective component of the prototype was the shape/form of the screwdriver as well as the fluid speed control mechanisms. Both were praised and intuitive for users. However, the least effective component was the interface of the digital readout component. By using icons paired with labels of in and out the digital readout component can be more clear on what is being represented. Additionally if the slider is placed between the label and the actual readout component, the label would be on the top, possibly better indicating what the digital readout is and what the in and out slider does.Next steps would be to improve on the interfaces of the digital readout component, since this was the least effective functionality. For this assignment I decided to design the electric screwdriver with OXOs design practices in mind. Of the three options, I thought this one sounded the most exciting in terms of its features and shape. Once I gathered the necessary tools and information, I dove into the design process. DesignI wanted to use OXOs design practices to design a screwdriver with a comfortable grip and intuitive control. I begun by drawing up some sketches using OXO devices like vegetable peelers and other simple handheld tools for reference. I wanted to emphasize the shape of the handle and make sure that the button locations were logical and quickly accessible. . I came up with a variety designs thinking about the ways a user could interact with the device. Overall, most of my designs had the same shape but some of the features jumped around. Once I settled on a design, I began to plan what materials Id need to build my first prototype. PrototypesI used thick paper and tape to create my first prototype for a quick and rough go at capturing the basic shape and visualizing the main features. I followed my sketches to try and form the handle shape.Once the prototype was finished, I conducted a few informal user tests to determine what aspects could be changed. I noticed that it would be better to switch the placements of the LED screen and speed settings. This seemed like a more logical set up as the the setting buttons would be grouped together. One feature I noticed while evaluating was that the spin dial for the head selection could have been reversed: instead of spinning a selector to land on a head, one could spin on the heads and line one up with a static selector. This could have made the head selection process more streamlined and might have matched more users mental models but it is hard to tell without testing it.Another interesting idea from critique was that the speed setting would mostly be the most commonly used setting making it more logical for that feature to be the main thumb control. This would then require the the power button to be on the reverses side of the device making it more like a trigger. I realized that I hadnt thought about the actual use of the speed settings and how they play a major role in giving the user control as they use the the device. In my next iteration of the device, I would definitely take this into account.
